MC COURSES

A multi-combination (MC) licence is required to drive any B-double or road train.

Multi-conmbination (MC) licence or B-double licence is the highest licence you can obtain for use on the road. It is highly sought after in the transport industry and can often be one of the higher paid licence classes for driver's working in the industry. We can provide training for a B-double licence and cater training to your needs and experience level.

Compulsory requirements for an MC licence

There are some compulsory requirements that must be met before obtaining an MC licence. You must have held a heavy rigid (HR) or heavy combination (HC) licence for a period totalling at least one year. You also need to undertake a compulsory training and assessment course. The course must be approved by the RTA and conducted by training providers accredited by the RTA.

Applying for an Multi-Combination (MC) licence

To apply for an MC licence, go to an RTA motor registry and:

  • Provide a current photo licence or other proof of identity that meets RTA requirements.
  • Complete a licence application form (RTA form 1001).
  • Provide a completed medical report.
  • Show that you meet MC licence compulsory requirements.
  • Pass an MC licence knowledge test.
  • Pass an eyesight test.

After this, your licence application form will be returned to you. Then:

  • Make sure your form has been stamped with a registry stamp, and reads "approved to attend multi-combination driver training and assessment course."
  • Bring this form to Macquarie Driving School
  • Complete the MC driver training and assessment course, and obtain a certificate of competency.

Then you simply take your certificate to the RTA and they will issue you your Multi-Combination/B-double licence.

B DOUBLE COURSES

The course will be conducted over an 8 hour period.

3 hours theory, 5 hours on road

As stipulated by the RTA the MC course has four components:

  1. THEORY - This component looks at the need for and benefits of a B-double.
The theory session ensures you are aware of the characteristics and handling of a multi-combination vehicle. That you understand the legal requirements to operate a multi-combination vehicle and appreciate the method of defensive driving and road rules.
  2. COUPLING - You will be required to safely and efficiently couple a B-double within an allotted time.
  3. REVERSING - You will reverse a B-double 100 metres and stop in a clearly defined bay.
  4. DRIVING - You will drive a B-double with training and assessment sessions. The driving test will be scored on an RTA curriculum and will obseve you managing and monitoring engine and vehicle performance. You will drive for not less than 45mins under varying road and traffic conditions and drive competently, defensively with consideration of other road users.
