Introduction
 
Before driving a heavy vehicle, you’ll need the appropriate licence for its class. Once you have it, you can also drive vehicles from lower licence classes (excluding motorcycles).
 
To apply for or upgrade your heavy vehicle licence:

• Pass an eyesight test.

• Complete the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test.

What is a Class LR (Light Rigid) Licence?

A Class LR (Light Rigid) Licence in NSW allows you to operate the following vehicles:

• Motor vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 4.5 tonnes but no more than 8 tonnes.

• Towed trailers with a maximum weight of 9 tonnes GVM.

• Vehicles with a GVM of no more than 8 tonnes that carry more than 12 adults, including the driver.

• All vehicles covered under Class C.

What Can You Drive with an LR Licence?

A Light Rigid Licence is the next step up from a standard car licence. Once you obtain this licence, you’ll be able to drive:

• Trucks up to 8 tonnes GVM.

• Mini-buses with up to 14 seats.

• Larger mini-buses with up to 25 seats.

• Ambulances (commonly required for ambulance service drivers).

• Certain small motorhomes.

This course is conducted in a mini-bus, making it accessible and straightforward. The one-day course has a high success rate.

Light Rigid Course Overview

LR Course Content

The course includes the following criteria:

1. Pre-operational Check.

2. Cabin Drills.

3. Start, Move Off, Shut Down, and Secure.

4. Manage Steering.

5. Manage Gears.

6. Manage Brakes.

7. Manage Accelerator.

8. Create and Maintain Crash Avoidance Space.

9. Protect Crash Avoidance Space.

10. Adhere to Road Rules and Directions.

11. Reversing Techniques.

12. Hill Stop/Start Procedures.

13. Load Securing.

14. Bus Stop Procedure (if training is conducted in a bus).

Final Competency Assessment (FCA)

Before attempting the FCA, you must complete the training course, covering all the above criteria. You will be trained and assessed on these components until you meet the required standards.

Once the training is completed, you will undertake the FCA, a final drive that is video recorded as per RMS requirements.

Upon successfully completing the FCA and achieving the required competency level, you will receive a certification. This certification can then be submitted to RMS, who will issue your Light Rigid Licence.
