Introduction
 
Before driving a heavy vehicle, you’ll need the appropriate licence for its class. Once you have it, you can also drive vehicles from lower licence classes (excluding motorcycles).

• Prime mover, low loader dolly, and low loader trailer combinations.

Steps to Obtain an MC Licence in NSW

1. Eligibility Requirements:

   • Must have held a Class HR or HC licence (or equivalent) for at least 1 year.

   • Time spent on a P2 HR licence counts, but you cannot practice driving an MC vehicle or upgrade to an MC licence until you hold a full Class HR or HC licence.

2. Tests and Assessments:

   • Pass an MC knowledge test.

   • Pass an eyesight test.

   • Pass a medical examination.

3. Training Requirements:

   • Successfully complete the Heavy Vehicle Competency-Based Assessment (HVCBA).

   • If you hold an HR licence, you must pass an HC assessment before starting MC training.

4. Final Steps:

   • Complete the MC driver training and assessment course (HVCBA).

   • Obtain a certificate of competency and submit it to the RMS.

   • The RMS will issue your Multi-Combination (MC) Licence.

 

Compulsory Requirements for an MC Licence

• Hold an HR or HC licence for at least 1 year.

• Complete a training and assessment course approved by RMS.

• The course must be conducted by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and an RMS-accredited trainer/assessor.

1. Visit an RMS motor registry and:

   • Provide a current photo licence or proof of identity.

   • Complete a licence application form.

   • Provide a completed medical report.

   • Pass the MC licence knowledge test.

   • Obtain the Class MC HVCBA guidebook and logbook.

2. Complete the training course and final assessment to receive your certificate of competency.

3. Submit the certificate to the RMS to obtain your MC licence.
