What is a Class MR (Medium Rigid) Licence?

A Class MR (Medium Rigid) Licence in NSW allows you to drive:

• Trucks and buses with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 8 tonnes and up to 2 axles.

• Towed trailers with a maximum weight of 9 tonnes GVM.

 

Am I Eligible to Apply for an MR Licence?

To apply for a Medium Rigid Licence in NSW, you must:

1. Hold a Class C Licence (except a learner licence) for at least one year.

   • Time spent on a P1 licence counts.

   • However, you cannot practice driving an MR vehicle or upgrade to an MR licence until you hold a P2 or full Class C licence.

2. Pass the MR Knowledge Test conducted by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

3. Pass an Eyesight Test.

4. Complete the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) or pass a Roads and Maritime driving test.

Final Competency Assessment (FCA)

To obtain your MR Licence, you must complete:

1. Training Course: Covers all the above criteria. You will be trained and assessed until you meet the required standards.

2. FCA: A final driving assessment, video recorded as per RMS requirements.

Once you successfully complete the FCA and meet the competency standards, you will be issued a certification. This certification can be submitted to RMS, who will then issue your Class MR Licence.
